Why does my pool turn green?

• Coming out of winter - pools that have been sat dormant over the cooler months are prone to turning green from algae growth when the weather warms up

Our green pool recovery process

1. Diagnose - we inspect the pool and the equipment to find the real cause, not just treat the symptoms

2. Water test - a full chemical test covering pH, chlorine, and alkalinity to identify the issues

3. Treatment - shock and balance the chemicals tailored to your pool type, whether that’s chlorine, salt, or mineral

4. Clean - vacuum, brush and filter clean or backwash to remove dead algae and get your pool sparkly

5. Prevention advice - we’ll advise you what to do so it hopefully doesn’t happen again

How long does it take?

Light green pools usually clear up within 24–48 hours. Dark green pools may take a little longer.

Whatever system your pool runs, we know how to bring it back safely and correctly. We check what’s actually going on with your equipment (including salt cells and chlorinators) before treating the water, so the fix lasts. Green, cloudy, or badly neglected pools can take a few days but it’s one of our specialties.

Do I need to drain my green pool?

Usually not. In most cases, we can treat and rebalance the existing water without draining the pool. We’ll assess the condition of the water and equipment first and recommend the safest and most effective approach.

Why does my pool keep turning green?

If your pool keeps turning green, there may be more going on than a simple chemical imbalance. Problems with filtration, circulation, your chlorinator or other pool equipment can all contribute. We’ll look at the underlying cause as part of the recovery, rather than simply treating the green water.
